badmarmarDANCE
Led by Artistic Director Marlo Martin, badmarmarDANCE is a Seattle-based contemporary dance company committed to the cultivation of compelling and emotionally immersive experiences for dancers and witnesses alike. The first iteration of the company was founded 18 years ago and was re-established in 2022 with seven new artists whose eclectic performance backgrounds and unified commitment to the coalescence of energy in space have brought fresh life to her vision and to the Seattle dance scene. Known for performances rooted in the dynamism and complexity of human perseverance, badmarmarDANCE artists dig deep into their lived experiences and collective memory in order to perform intensely visceral and emotive works, rich with dynamic contrast. From ferocious, athletic unison phrase-work to resonant visual storytelling, moments of raw exhalation to those of poignant tenderness, badmarmarDANCE works are a visual and experiential rollercoaster, reflective of lifetimes touched by love and loss.
In October 2023, the company debuted WITNESS, Martin’s first full-length work in 10 years, which was met with immense anticipation, three sold out productions at eXit SPACE | NOD Theater, and community acclaim. As the resident company at Martin’s own NOD Theater, the group has since performed at BOOST Dance Festival (2022, 2023), Launch (2023, 2024), takePAUSE (2022, 2023, 2024), and the National Dance Education Organization Conference (2024). They have enjoyed two annual weekend residencies in Bellingham, WA,, one of which was in residency at Western Washington University. They are currently working towards their second full-length which will premier in February 2025 at eXit SPACE | NOD Theater. Martin and her company aim to perform on bigger stages and for broader audiences in and beyond Seattle in the years to come.
Ultimately, badmarmarDANCE embodies a collective of artists committed to sharing sensation and movement in community with fellow artists and art lovers of diverse backgrounds. They are teachers and choreographers, researchers, and writers with diverse backgrounds of their own, and a mutual interest in the cultivation of curiosity within their performances and community connections.
